Most homeowners need stump grinding. Grinding cuts the stump down below ground level, leaves the roots to break down on their own, and causes far less damage to your lawn. Full stump removal pulls out the stump and main roots. It makes sense when you plan to build, pour concrete, or set footings in that exact spot.
What is the difference?
| Stump grinding | Stump removal | |
|---|---|---|
| What happens | A grinder chips the stump below the soil line | The stump and main roots are dug or pulled out |
| Yard damage | Small area, filled with chips or soil | Large hole, heavy equipment |
| Roots left behind | Yes, they rot over time | Most are removed |
| Best for | Lawns, garden beds, replanting nearby | New construction, patios, foundations |
Why not just leave the stump?
Old stumps get in the way of mowing, trip people, and can send up new sprouts. Decaying wood can also attract insects and fungus.
Do I need to call 811 before stump grinding?
Yes. Grinding digs into the soil, and utility lines can be shallow. The law covers both sides of the state line:
- Kansas: contact Kansas 811 at least two full working days before digging, not counting weekends and holidays.
- Missouri: contact Missouri One Call at 811 or 800-DIG-RITE 3 to 10 working days before digging.
The call is free. Utilities mark their lines with paint or flags.
Can I plant a new tree in the same spot?
You can, but the ground is full of wood chips and old roots for a while. Most people plant a few feet to the side. If you want the exact spot, ask your crew to grind deeper and replace the chips with topsoil.
