A tree is at risk of falling when you see deep cracks in the trunk, a lean that is new or getting worse, large dead branches, mushrooms or fungus at the base, or soil lifting on one side. One sign means watch it. Two or more means call a tree service before the next storm.

Winter in Kansas City brings ice, wind, and wet snow. A weak tree that held up all summer can fail under the weight of one ice storm. Checking your trees now, while the leaves are down, is the easiest time to spot trouble.

What are the warning signs a tree may fall?

Walk around the tree and look for these:

  • Cracks in the trunk. Deep splits, especially where two big trunks join in a V shape.
  • A new or growing lean. Some trees grow at an angle. A lean that changed this year is a problem.
  • Soil heaving. Raised or cracked soil on the side away from the lean means roots are pulling up.
  • Dead branches in the crown. Bare limbs that did not leaf out this year can drop without warning.
  • Fungus at the base. Mushrooms or shelf fungus on the trunk or roots often mean rot inside.
  • Hollow spots. Cavities, soft wood, or sawdust at the base.
  • Branches over the roof, driveway, or power lines. Not a sign of failure on its own, but it raises the cost of one.

Should I remove the tree or just trim it?

It depends on where the damage is. A tree with one bad limb can often be saved with careful trimming. A tree with rot in the trunk, a cracked main stem, or roots lifting out of the ground usually needs to come down. Never stand under a tree you think is failing to inspect it.

What should I do if a tree looks dangerous?

  1. Keep people, pets, and cars out from under it.
  2. Take photos from a few angles.
  3. If it touches a power line, stay away and call your utility first.
  4. Call a tree service for an on-site look.
